Terms of Use

Last updated: 2 June 2026

These terms govern your use of the hu-net mobile application and any backend services we operate at hu-net.io or trust.ushadow.io. By installing or using hu-net you agree to them. If you don't agree, please uninstall the app.

What hu-net is

hu-net is an open-source, peer-to-peer trust layer. It lets you build a portable, cryptographically signed graph of in-person connections, exchange end-to-end encrypted messages over Nostr, and re-rank your Bluesky feed by who you actually know. Every attestation verifies standalone — the backend is an index, not an authority.

Your account

  • Your account is a key pair stored in your device's secure enclave. You alone control it.
  • You are responsible for backing up or recovering your key. We cannot recover it for you.
  • You must be at least 13 years old (16 in the EU/UK) to use hu-net.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use hu-net to harass, threaten, defraud, impersonate, or stalk other people.
  • Forge handshakes, falsify attestations, or otherwise misrepresent who you have met.
  • Use hu-net to distribute child sexual abuse material, incite violence, or break the law.
  • Attempt to disrupt the optional backend, the Nostr relays we publish defaults for, or other users' devices.
  • Strip notices, claim authorship of the source, or remove license headers from the open-source code.

Because messages are end-to-end encrypted, we cannot read them. Moderation is therefore peer-to-peer: block the sender in the app, and revoke any vouches you've issued.

User-generated content

You retain ownership of everything you publish, send, or sign. By using hu-net, you grant us a limited, royalty-free license to transmit and store that content as needed to operate the service (e.g. relay-routing of encrypted messages, indexing public profile updates if you publish them). This license ends when you delete your account.

Reports and moderation

hu-net follows Apple's objectionable-content requirement: you can block a user at any time from the connection screen, and you can report concerns to stu@theawesome.co.uk. We commit to acting on credible reports within 24 hours. We may revoke optional backend access for accounts that repeatedly abuse the service; we cannot revoke your key or your messages.

Third-party services

hu-net integrates with Bluesky / AT Protocol, Nostr relays, and (if you link them) X, GitHub, LinkedIn. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms. We are not responsible for their availability or behaviour.

No warranty

hu-net is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. We don't promise the app will be available, free of bugs, or fit for any particular purpose. The full MIT license is in the source tree.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the developers of hu-net are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the app, including but not limited to lost messages, lost connections, or compromised keys.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms when the service changes. We'll update the "Last updated" date and surface material changes in-app on next launch. Continued use after a change means you accept it.
